  1. The following is a letter from Don Ware and Charles Flannigan
  2. concerning a recent article in the Pensacola News Journal
  3. dealing with the Ed Walters UFO photographs.  The letter was
  4. sent to both the Pensacola News Journal and the Gulf Breeze
  5. Sentinel.

  11. Dear Editor,
  12.  
  13.    As the primary investigators of the famous Gulf Breeze UFO
  14. case now involving over 70 photographs, Charles Flannigan
  15. and I feel we must comment on the "road shot."  This photo,
  16. #19, has received doubtful comment in newspapers and TV
  17. recently.  One investigator said that the reflection on the road
  18. doesn't form a round spot, so the photo most be a double
  19. exposure.  A careful look at the surface of Shoreline Drive,
  20. 191B where the UFO hovered, will help explain the reflection
  21. resulting from the large bright light source on the bottom of
  22. the UFO.
  23.     
  24.    Looking down on the surface, you can see that about 30% is
  25. mostly white with some tan rock.  This rock has a hard smooth
  26. surface.  It is embedded in comparatively soft dark asphalt, 
  27. and the light colored rocks have become oriented with mostly
  28. flat surfaces up.  Over time, some asphalt has worn away 1 to
  29. 2 millimeters below the hard rock surfaces.  A series of photos
  30. taken with a 100,000 candlepower light shining at various
  31. angles on the road shows enhanced reflectivity at shallow
  32. angles.  This seems to be the result of spectral reflection from
  33. the light colored rocks.  Because the asphalt is worn down
  34. below the surface of the rock, only the rock is visible when
  35. looking farther down the road.  This causes more photons to
  36. reach the camera than you would normally expect from
  37. light reflected at a small angle.  Now the shape of the 
  38. reflection from the UFO becomes easier to understand.

  40.    For those who still have doubts about the authenticity
  41. of this photo, you might look carefully at two photos in a 
  42. copy of THE GULF BREEZE SIGHTINGS.  Turn to page 129 and
  43. look at the daylight photo of the road.  Compare the brightness
  44. of the double-yellow line between the hood and windshield
  45. wiper with the brightness near the spot where the UFO hovered.
  46. Now look one page back at photo #19 and make the same
  47. comparison. (Good light is helpful here.) The double-yellow
  48. line appears brighter near the UFO.  This tells us that light
  49. from the UFO is reflecting off the line; hence, NO DOUBLE 
  50. EXPOSURE (emphasis theirs).

  52.    We have had the good fortune of getting to know Ed and 
  53. Frances Walters well since our extensive investigation of the
  54. many Gulf Breeze UFO encounters of 1987 and '88.  They are
  55. two of the most considerate, hard-working, and lovable people
  56. we know.  They have shown great courage and composure 
  57. under public attack by several UFO debunkers.  We wish them
  58. the best of luck in all of their endeavors, whether it is a $1-a-
  59. year job or the sale of a mind-broadening book.
